Riot Screenprints
The Summer of 2020. Feeling the need to do something, I returned to screenprinting. The typeface used, "Martin", designed by Vocal Type Co., was based on signage used in the Memphis Sanitation Strike of 1968. The type was hand-traced onto the screen and the stencil prepared with screen drawing fluid and filler, giving it the hand-painted feel.
The Gold Brick posters seemed a natural pairing. The gold brick is an icon I started using after the election of 2016 when I really wanted to start throwing bricks. Instead, I designed. The brick recalls 1968 —"Sous les pavés, la plage!" (Under paving stones, the beach!)— and the gold, of course, equals Trump. Put together—a common brick painted gold—it both references the grift, and the need to end complacency.
These were posted throughout downtown and a second run of the MLK quote were "sold" for proof of a $20+ donation to a BLM-centric cause, raising over $160.
